A person’s mindset is a collection of beliefs or thoughts that determine the interpretation or response to situations, circumstances, or events.
What is Growth Mindset?
A growth mindset is based on the belief that our basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies, and help from others.
According to Carol Dweck, “Those with a ‘fixed mindset’ believe that abilities are mostly innate and interpret failure as the lack of necessary basic abilities, while those with a ‘growth mindset’ believe that they can acquire any given ability provided they invest effort or study.”Carol Dweck,Mindset:The New Psychology of Success(2016a,p7)
Therefore the way we think about our ability has a real impact on the results we achieve in our life.
Fixed Mindset VS. Growth Mindset
Dweck identified five contexts in which mindset makes a crucial difference in learning behaviors :
challenges ,obstacles , effort, criticism ,and success of others.
|Contexts||Growth Mindset||Fixed Mindset|
|Challenges||Faces challenges||Avoid challenges|
|Obstacles||Keeps going when the going gets tough||Gives up easily and becomes defensive|
|Effort||Sees effort as essential for achieving mastery||See effort as pointless|
|Criticism||Actively learns from negative but useful feedback||Ignore negative but useful feedback|
|Success of others||Learns from and is inspired by the success of others||Is threatened by the success of others|
How to use the growth mindset posters?
Teaching your students to have a growth mindset help them to see their failure as an opportunity to learn new skills and dominate the obstacles.
The purpose of the growth mindset posters is to encourage your students and help them work towards success.
Therefore, print some of these quotes on paper or card stock.Then, add them to your bulletin boards for your students to read each day as a reminder, or send (or mail or email*) home to your students during distance learning.
